I love to take photos, and I have about 40GB of them from the last few years.

Since I bought my MacBook in September, I've been using iPhoto to import photos from my camera, create events, albums, rename photos, delete and edit images, and so forth.

The interface on iPhoto works fantastically for me. I plug in my camera, iPhoto pops up, it autorecognizes by the dates on the photos how many events are on the camera, I name the events, and it downloads them. Then I go in, delete photos I don't care for, and rename all the photos to their "Event Name - Number", since the default on my camera is dsc_bignumber.

The other nice thing about iPhoto is that it is integrated with lots of webservices. Facebook has a great plugin for quickly uploading and tagging your photos, as does google's picasa. Apple has it's own web gallery which requires a .Mac account. Admittedly their albums are gorgeous, but I have my own hosting and don't care to pay for more.

Several times I've thought I should get around to backing up my photos, and that's where the sticking point begins. iPhoto doesn't store the photos on the disk in a standard manner. It keeps all the original photos, never actually changes the name on disk, and creates a duplicate folder called modified which contains any changed images. Also, it stores *all* your photos in the iPhoto Library, which doesn't even show up in the file browser (*annoying*). This would be fine if I only used Macs and iPhoto. But since I don't, if I want to back up my photos to my desktop, I have to merge the folders for modified and original for each event, and rename the images before copying them over. Slightly obnoxious for a one-time thing but I could write a script up real quick to do it. What if I want to go back and change the event later, though? I'd have to keep track of any changes I made in iPhoto and make them to my desktop library. If I want to make changes on my desktop and have them mirrored back to my desktop in a format iPhoto would understand, I'm plumb out of luck.

The other big annoyance is the ridiculous amount of disk space that the iPhoto library uses.

So I'm not sure what to think. I'm probably going to find another application for managing photos on OS X: it's unreasonable not to have a good backup mechanism that leaves the PHOTOS in a format that are understandable, e.g., files named with the event, in a folder named by the event. Looks to me like iPhoto just wants to lock me into using it, and nothing else. *irritated*

Suggestions, comments, commiserations? What software are you using, if you use OS X, to manage your photos?
