I've been using linux for quite a while now. I've administered a fair number of servers, helped many, many students with their personal installs, and used it as my primary OS for the last five years.

It has some great things going for it. The windowmanagers have finally figured themselves out...beryl is fantastic. It's snappy, elegant, and engaging. There's a number of programs that are exceedingly well-designed, and more reliable than their for-pay counterparts. I'm extremely happy with mpd+sonata, my music library manager and client. Sonata is brilliantly designed, simple to use and understand, and it always always works. Gajim is a functional chat client, and I trust it to always be there when it should be.

Firefox, on the other hand, is crap. It's always crashing on me. It works *ok*, but it's not fast. Tab-switching is rather slow and clunky, and it's handling of more tabs than fits in the window is retarded.

For coding I use gnome-terminal and vim (C, C++, java, ada, python, php, perl), or monodevelop (C#, boo, etc), or drscheme.

I used Gentoo until May of this year, about. I switched to Ubuntu for a number of reasons, but probably primarily because I'm tired of adminning my system, and I'd like it to work for me, instead of me working to make it work. It's different if you run a lab of computers, in that case it's not a waste of time to carefully set up an image: hundreds of people will end up using it. It should be perfect, and doing it by hand is a good way to get it there.

I like a lot of things about Ubuntu: in general, it Just Works(tm). This is a happy thing. Unfortunately, I've run into a large number of snags with it. It doesn't upgrade smoothly in general, and the error messages it gives when it runs into problems are ultimately completely unhelpful. Firefox on ubuntu crashes the same as it did on gentoo, even though I've gotten rid of all my plugins. Beryl (or is it xgl?) routinely bogs down and borks my system, forcing a reboot.

I'm tired of it. I'd like my system to run.

I used Windows begrudgingly for years. It has never been a pleasant experience, mostly because I can't live without multiple desktops, and every single app I've installed to emulate it is crap. Many of them want you to pay money, but their quality is far worse than that of beryl in linux, which is free. It's not just the multiple desktops though: windows apps in general want you to pay for them, and are crappier than their open source counterparts, which don't work that well in windows. Foobar? WinAmp? OpenOffice? Yuck. Sonata, Gnumeric, or Abiword are far better. Windows Media Player isn't *bad*. The ui is pretty nice, but it's far too unresponsively slow for me to like it. I walked away from thousands of dollars of software handed to me by my school to use open source apps, and I had a much better experience.

I haven't used MacOS much. From what I've seen of their company, I'm excited to give them a shot. Their media players are well-designed, and the attention to detail in all of their products is unparalleled. Would I be happy as a Mac user? If I pick up a Macbook when leopard comes out, will I be happy with it, or will I regret losing my customization options?

The thing that scares me most is my experience with iTunes. iTunes is asinine, at least, it is for me, because it doesn't detect changes in my library between times that I'm in linux and then back to windows. It also does not use a standard playlist format, so I can't sync with any of my other programs. In general, it's very proprietary. At this point you can't even add music to your iPod in linux without fear of losing all your current data.

A macbook is a pretty big investment, but I'm tired of being left out. Just because I don't use Windows or MacOSX, I can't watch [Movie X] or play with [Game Y]. It's annoying.

Although, I'll probably have the same problem with MacOS, since it's still the minority platform. *sigh* I expect too much from my computer - I'm spoiled.
