Fascinating.

So, I've been researching web software the last couple of days at my job, and today I was curious about market share for various dynamic ui frameworks.

Google trends says this. I included silverlight, but it doesn't even register, so I removed it.

Of course this isn't conclusive or anything, because searches for a technology does not constitute market share, but it's an indicative factor of interest.

Then I started wondering about other things...

linux, apple, mac, windows. Now, why do these trends follow each other so closely? So I enter in a neutral term. And they're still following each other. Curious...

Here's my hypothesis. Obviously that doesn't explain the short term dips and peaks, but over the long term, it shows a tendency towards increasing searches via live, and thus a decrease in use of google search. You could probably find the reason for those dips and trends elsewhere, via seasons, holidays, ask.com, yahoo, and other things of that ilk.

I'd say that's a bug in google trends comparisons myself. Makes it harder to see the actual comparison of the items if it's being affected so strongly by the number of searches in general. My personal choice would be to choose a neutral term like above (or a few of them), and then filter that out of the resulting trends graph via some signals work.

Fun times.
